Poetry Contest Announced

{DANBURY, CT} April is National Poetry Month. In preparation, the Danbury Cultural Commission invites Danbury Students in Grades 9 through 12 to enter its Annual Poetry Contest. 

The POEM PARAMETERS: 

  • Any theme or form, not to exceed 200 lines, will be accepted.

  • School appropriate language and subject is required.

  • No more than 2 poems per author may be submitted.

  • Poems in non-English must have a written English translation.

  • Winning authors should be prepared to read their poem aloud and then give a brief (50 word) description of their inspiration for it at the awards ceremony in May.

  • Poems previously printed or appearing in other publications are not eligible. (Authors must control their copyright.)

  • No entries will be returned.

How to submit:  
Participating high schools, Danbury HighAlternative Center for Excellence, and Immaculate High have a school coordinator. If a student attends those schools, they should make submissions through their school. 
If your school is not participating, or for homeschooled students, they may submit directly to the Cultural Commission by the deadline. 

The SUBMISSION RULES (electronic submissions) (Preferred)

  • The writer's name, address, phone number, school and grade should appear on the top of the entry. (The Commission will remove the identifying information and replace it with a code, for blind judging.)

  • The poem should be typed and double spaced.

  • Submissions should be *.DOC, *.DOCX, or *.txt format. (*.PDF is not acceptable, for formatting reasons.)

SUBMISSION RULES (physical submissions) (Less desirable)

  • The writer's name should not appear on the entry.

  • The poem should be typed and double spaced.

  • A3x5 card with author's name, address, phone number, school and grade should be attached to the entry for identification purposes.

 
This Year’s judge is Western Connecticut State University Professor Emeritus, Dr. James R. Scrimgeour. A total of at least $500 in prizes will be awarded: First Prize $200, Second Prize $125, Third Prize $75. There may be additional Cash awards for Honorable Mentions. 

 

The poetry entry deadline is April 3, 2021.

About the Commission

The Danbury Cultural Commission was formed by the City Charter in 1967. The 11 members continue to encourage within the City of Danbury, participation in, and promotion, development, acceptance and appreciation of, artistic and cultural activities which include, but are not limited to music, theater, dance, painting, sculpture, architecture, literature, films and allied arts and crafts, and to this end may join with private patrons and with institutions and professional organizations. The Commission office hours are Monday, and Wednesday 4:00 to 6:00 P.M. and by appointment, and meets each fourth Monday in their 256 Main Street office. Mr. Harvey Center is Chairman.
