The Cultural Commission offers scholarship awards to students continuing their studies in any discipline of the arts. The selection committee will determine scholarship recipients. Successful candidates must supply an IRS W-9 form to the City Finance Department.

Danbury Cultural Commission Scholarship Criteria 

Eligibility  

• Applicant must be a resident of Danbury, Connecticut.  

• Open to high school seniors pursuing post-secondary education.  

• Applicant must demonstrate active involvement or strong interest in the arts (visual arts, music, dance, theater, literature, film, design, digital arts, cultural arts, or related fields). 

Application Requirements  

• Completed scholarship application form. [available from each school guidance office]

• Essay (500-750 words) describing: 

  • How the arts have played a meaningful role in the applicant's life.  

  • Ways the applicant engages with the arts (personally, academically, or through the community). 

  • How the applicant plans to incorporate the arts into their future education, career, or personal development.  

• One letter of recommendation from a teacher, mentor, coach, or community leader (preferably someone who can speak to the applicant’s involvement in the arts).  

• Portfolio or examples of artistic work (optional but encouraged).  

Evaluation Criteria 

• Commitment to the Arts  

  • Demonstrated participation in artistic or cultural activities (school programs, community projects, personal practice, performances, exhibitions, etc.)  

• Impact & Personal Connection   

  • Applicant clearly expresses the importance and influence of the arts in their life.  

  • Shows thoughtfulness, sincerity, and passion in their essay.  

• Community Involvement   

  • Engagement in cultural or community arts programs in Danbury or surrounding areas.  

  • Volunteerism, mentorship, or arts outreach considered a plus.   

• Future Potential  

  • Strong interest in continuing arts education or creative pursuits.   

  • Art as a purposeful and meaningful part of their future goals.   

• Character & Academic Responsibility   

  • Demonstrates good character and responsibility.   

  • Academic performance considered, but not the primary deciding factor. 

Selection Priority 

Preference may be given to students who: 

• Have contributed to the cultural and artistic community in Danbury.  

• Demonstrate a genuine personal commitment to arts and culture, regardless of career path.
